This is the type of book I wish had been available when I taught middle grade students!

This is a solid start to a new middle grade series (though it did feel a bit more like a young adult book, as the characters came across as older than 11) about a young black teen who's the first conjurer to attend the Arcanum Training Institute for Marvelous and Uncanny Endeavors. Things started a bit slowly, but the pace picked up as the story unfolded. While there are some Harry Potter vibes, this is definitely not just another knockoff. The diverse cast is well developed and relatable. The worldbuilding is perfect for the genre. The pacing is a bit uneven at times, but it balances out overall. Important topics, including prejudices and discrimination, are handled tactfully. Vivid detailing makes this one easy to visualize. Ella's struggle to prove her worth will likely resonate with readers.
