The story begins with eleven-year-old Ella preparing to set out for her first day at a magical school. Similar to Harry Potter (she gets a letter from the school and only Marvellers can attend), the students have five "paragons" and can choose their marvel (a special talent).
Ella is the first in her family of conjurers to be chosen to go to this school and she's determined to be the best. We don't get much of why she wants to be the best, but it's possible that as the older sister in her family and the first to go to this school, she wants to prove she's able to be an excellent student.
Young readers will definitely relate to Ella (like starting middle school in a different setting), yet will enjoy the magical elements of this world.
