This is such a well written novel. The author is able to grip the reader right away with her story about her twisted ovary. Her mistrust of western medicine is understandable, and it shows how other cultures or groups of people may feel as though they are being ignored by the western medical system. I think this is especially apparent when she talks about a doctor who changed his opinion of a CAT scan right away after she mentioned it. This was potent because the doctor did not explain why he, the expert, readily took the advice of someone who is not in medicine. So it seemed as though the doctor may not be as knowledgeable as is readily assumed. I also loved how the author was able to present her anger for the doctor that killed her mother. I think a lot of people and writers are not as upfront about their real emotions and water them down so that they are more palatable, but this author does not shy away from hard truths, and dark emotions.
