Just Not For Me

I'll be honest and upfront in saying that in general, I don't typically enjoy biographies and memoirs. They're just not the books I usually gravitate towards. However, after I was given the opportunity to read this memoir, I decided to give it a shot since the description sounded interesting enough, and I've had memoirs surprise me in the past.

Unfortunately, this was one of the memoirs that I just didn't jive with.

While I appreciate the perspective we get in this book--from an American-born child with a Vietnamese refugee family--I just never found myself connecting to Susan, the narrator. The actual book itself is short, but because I found the pacing to be slow, and thus is felt longer to me (in a bad way). I just found myself struggling to pick this book up whenever I put it down, as I just wasn't engaged enough in the story.

I'm glad that most readers did enjoy this book, however, and I hope it will continue to find the right audience. This just wasn't for me, unfortunately.
