This was a really interesting memoir to read especially when I was home recovering from a minor surgery. The story unfolds slowly and the author allows us to become fully immersed in the family and the history of what had come before. We follow Susan Lieu as she searches for the answers that have plagued Susan for as long as she can remember. As refugees from Vietnam Susan’s family has endured many hardships along the way including many previous failed attempts to escape before finally finding success. Susan’s mother is and always has been the woman who holds everything together. Somewhere along the path Susan’s mother makes a dramatic decision to do something that will forever change their lives and have dire consequences.
The Manicurist’s Daughter allows the reader to see how easily a successful, strong woman can fall prey to circumstances.
