The Manicurist's Daughter was about a woman named Susan Lieu who was a refugee from the Vietnam War. Her family escaped to California in the 1980s and once there, set up two successful nail salons. Her mom had plastic surgery and it did not go well. Afterward, Susan is left with lots of questions as to why her mom thought she had to change her image. She also had a lot of questions about her family's life in Vietnam and why the plastic surgeon was able to go on operating after her mother’s death. I found it interesting to learn about the nail salon business and all the things that it took to keep it up and running efficiently. It was also cool to learn about traditional Vietnamese meals, phrases, and practices. I felt bad for Susan when her female relatives were bashing her weight, someday maybe they will see the beauty in all women. The author is a fantastic storyteller and writes in a way that keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next.
