This was a really interesting memoir, at the most basic level about Susan's desire to uncover what happened to her mother, who died from complications from plastic surgery when Susan was 11. As with any good memoir, there was so much more to it than that though!
*
Susan at first wants to avenge her mother's death, perhaps sue the doctor who killed her. But when she finds out the doctor has recently died, she turns more to understanding who her mother was as a person. This was a really interesting look into the family dynamics, as she butts up against the walls her family puts up, not wanting to be reminded of those sad times.

Susan goes through a lot in an effort to find herself, and it was tough to see how little support she received from her family. But it becomes clear that her family is also dealing with stuff, just in different ways.

One thing I didn't love about this was how much time it spent on spirits, talking with psychics and referencing spiritual possessions. This is clearly a big part of Susan's story, but wasn't something that resonates with me, so I found myself skimming through those parts.

Overall a good memoir, with a lot to think about regarding health care, immigration, families, and self-discovery.
