I'll be the first to admit that memoir as a genre isn't usually my cup of tea. But upon reading the sample of Manicurist's Daughter, I was immediately drawn in by Susan Lieu's writing and I had to read more.

There's a lot to digest here--Lieu's mother is the main character as she seeks to understand the circumstances surrounding the woman's untimely death resulting from botched plastic surgery. It's heartbreaking to think what Susan must have felt searching for these answers, especially trying to understand what led her beloved mother to feel like she had to change her body to begin with. It's such a relevant topic--even with a lot of emphasis on "body positivity" all over social media today, we all seem to be driven by someone else's opinion of beauty.

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone, and even if you don't think memoir is your thing, do give it a try.

Special thanks to BookishFirst and Celadon Books for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
