Susan is the youngest of four siblings. Everyone has a part as a worker in the two nail salons, her parents own. Including her nine aunts and uncle. Her mother dies from a botched surgery when Susan is 11 years old. Her mother was the matriarch of the family and very much in charge. Susan wants to know who her mother was, since she didn’t get to have much alone time with her. Her family is not helpful at all when she has questions.
I felt bad for Susan because her mother was not the motherly kind. Her father was mean to her. Her siblings didn’t want to give her any answers. Her aunts and grandma weren’t very nice. What an awful way for a kid to grow up.
By the end of the story, Susan had more of an understanding of her family and her mother. She got a better picture of who they were. This was a journey of love, finding herself and who her mother was to her. I really enjoyed this story more than I thought I would.
