A while back, I won a memoir called "Affliction" on this site. Like this book, it was a daughter making sense of the grief she experienced with the loss of her father, albeit with the knowledge that for much his life, her father hid the fact he was gay. I appreciated that memoir for how human and realistic it depicted its subject, and the flaws of the writer themselves.

"The Manicurist's Daughter" has much of the same elements, although it is focused on how impossible beauty standards resulted in a tragic outcome for the writer's mother. It's obvious that like the writer of "Affliction" this book is meant as both a message and a way to express the author's grief.
