For those eagerly awaiting Alex Michaelides’ latest work The Maidens is a fast-paced and intriguing read. Greek mythology is woven expertly into the arc of the story and excerpts from other incredible literary works are interspersed throughout. That said, it was not the gripping and engrossing read I had hoped for. In the pages of The Maidens we journey with a psychotherapist struggling to reckon with her own past while caring for patients who are deeply troubled and simultaneously trying to outsmart a murderer. However, the twist at the end did not land for me. It felt like a far reach that was mildly disappointing. There was a clever nod to The Silent Patient, an appearance of Theo, and mention of The Grove giving this prequel/spin-off wider context. As I write this review I find myself wondering if Michaelides will write more and if by some chance he’ll write a story for Ruth, the therapist for both of his main characters to date. Time will tell.

Many thanks due to Celadon Books for sending this ARC my way.
