This has got to be one of the most talked-about books of 2021. I've seen this book everywhere on bookstagram and on good reads so needless to say it's one of the most hyped-up books.

I have to confess that I've been a bit apprehensive about reading the Maidens. I didn't really like Alex Michaelides's prior novel, The Silent Patient, but The Maidens has definitely piqued my interest. I I love thrillers and Greek mythology so when a book combines both, it's going to earn a spot on my tbr list.

Going into the book, we meet our main character, Mariana who is a walking Greek tragedy. Mariana is a group therapist who is grieving the loss of her husband. Besides her massive loss, the only family that she has living is her niece Zoe. Zoe is a student at Cambridge University. Soon Mariana learns that Zoe’s best friend at University Tara was found in a mossy swamp brutally murdered. Who and why would someone do something so terrible to a brilliant and beautiful young woman?

The only issues I had with the book was that it is a bit slower paced for my preference. Also I wasn't a big fan of the main character Mariana I kept wondering why Mariana is even trying to solve the murders? There really was not much of a motive behind her playing detective.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Greek mythology incorporated into the book. The story of Persephone has always been one of my favorites in Greek mythology so I loved how it was woven into the Maidens. I was positive that this book was going to be a solid 3 star book until an unexpected twist was revealed. After this, I had to bump it up to a 4 star rating. Days after I finished the book, I found myself still thinking about the story. Also if you pay close attention there is a nod to Theo and Alicia from the authors prior novel, The Silent Patient.

Overall, Was the Maidens worth all the hype? Absolutely. I would definitely recommend to thriller fans who like a slower paced novel with an unexpected twist.
