The Maidens, By Alex Michaelides captured my attention immediately, and continued to hold it throughout the whole book. The pace is a little slower than The Silent Patient, but works well for this book. Mariana's niece, Zoe, attends Cambridge, and her friend is found murdered. Mariana (and Zoe) suspect Edward, a revered Greek Tragedy professor with a group of female followers called The Maidens. Mariana has had tragedy in her own life, and Zoe is like a daughter to her. Mariana immediately rushes to Cambridge (her alma mater too) to support Zoe and investigate the crime (when the police are not believing that Edward is the culprit.

This book is often compared to the Silent Patient, for obvious reasons, but it is suspenseful and twisty in its own right. Although the pace of the story is slower, it is no less of a book. I enjoyed the characters of Mariana, and the creepiness of Edward. The interactions between them are fabulous, and you definitely can tell the reasons that Mariana has her mind made up about the culprit of the crime. The twist though, is something that I was NOT expecting at all, and really caught me by surprise. If anything, it was several twists in one, like dominoes falling! This book kept me glued to it, and I absolutely loved it.

Technically, I also loved the shorter chapters. For a parent of a toddler, it's so nice to have short 2-6 page chapters, that I can finish, rather than huge chapters that may take me awhile. Everything is relayed in a concise fashion, and I love the writing style as well.

Also, the ending ties into the Silent Patient were just genius, and an added benefit to the story, especially to those who had already read The Silent Patient.

I gave this 5/5 stars, and CANNOT WAIT for the next offering by this author!
