Reeling from her husband’s death in Greece, Mariana gets involved in a murder investigation at Cambridge University. She is concerned charismatic and beloved professor, Edward Fosca is the murderer. She finds his female group of adoring students, The Maidens, inappropriate at best.

I loved the mythology aspect of this story. I think it was genius how he weaved myth into crime. If it wasn’t for that, I’m honestly not sure I would have enjoyed it that much. The mystery itself ended up being shocking but I felt a bit unbelievable, as many thrillers can be. In the end, I still enjoyed the story and it’s worth a read, especially if you love a hint of mythology and mysticism.

“Once you kill another human being, there’s no going back. I see that now. I see I have become altogether a different person. It’s a bit like being born, I suppose. But no ordinary birth - it’s a metamorphosis. What emerges from the ashes is not a Phoenix, but an uglier creature: a deformed, incapable of flight, a predator using its claws to cut and rip.”

The Maidens comes out 6/15.
