THE MAIDENS is a twisty, dark, page-turning read, perfect for fans of THE SILENT PATIENT. From the beginning, THE MAIDENS is rich in atmosphere as we meet the main character Mariana. She's alone, mourning her late husband, feeling cursed that everyone close to her dies. As she's dealing with an inappropriately attentive therapy client, she gets a phone call from her niece that her friend has been murdered.

From there, the story doesn't let up as Mariana realizes that the police aren't even investigating the man she knows is the murderer--Professor Edward Fosca, a charismatic Classics teacher.

I loved the short chapters (they kept me thinking--I have time to read one more, until I'd finished most of the book in one sitting...)

I think this is a story where it's best to go into with without knowing much of the plot so that the author can take you on a journey. I will say it was impossible to know who to trust. Additionally, the play allusions and the nods to Greek god mythology added a deeper layer to the story and made me want to go dust off my old lit books and reread these stories!
