Mariana is sure Edward Fosca is guilty of murder. He is a professor at her niece Zoe’s university, and Mariana becomes fixated on him when one of Zoe’s friends is murdered. When another body is found, Mariana pushes for Fosca even more threatening to destroy her credibility, but she won’t stop. No matter how dangerous it gets for her.

It is official, I will read anything Alex Michaelides writes. The Maidens is an engrossing thriller that has Michaelides’ hallmarks of psychotherapy and Greek mythology in a fresh way that kept me wanting more. Told in six parts, this one will keep you turning pages way past your bedtime.

One of my favorite things is when the setting becomes a character in a book, as Cambridge does in The Maidens. From the pubs, to punts on the river, to the college itself, you will feel like you’re there. You will also feel like something sinister is lurking behind you. It also made me extremely nostalgic for college but, you know, without the murder.

Another thing I love in books is when they involve a touch of the supernatural. In The Maidens, it feels like Mariana is making a connection with Persephone. You can never tell if it is just her grief manifesting or if it is real. I really enjoyed exploring that idea.

The Maidens is a psychological suspense book bringing all the dark academia vibes. I couldn’t put it down. If you enjoy slow burn suspense with a pulse pounding ending, you need this one. The Maidens is out in the US on 6/15!
