The Maidens is my most anticipated thriller release in 2021 after reading The Silent Patient and giving it an easy 5 stars. This first look did not disappoint! I absolutely love the dark, academic vibes of this book. I recognized Michaelides’ unique writing style- dark and mysterious and infused with references to Greek culture.
I love the short chapters and the flow of the book. As someone with a degree in psychology, I also appreciate the references to psychology, including depression/melancholia, Sigmund Freud, group therapy dynamics, and trauma.
The prologue sets up suspense for the rest of the story. And in just a few chapters, I am already so invested in Mariana’s character. I am impressed that he was able to draw me into her story this quickly. I’m so curious about what happened to her husband- the first look ended with a major cliff hanger!
My favorite aspect of The Maidens so far is the contrast between the dark and light imagery that seems to align with before and after her husband’s death. The overall vibe is dark, but the author contrasts this with bright descriptions of Mariana’s time in the “yellow house”.
