I love to see what authors will do with the first sentence of their novels, and this one does not disappoint. The first sentence already brings tension, suspense, doubt, and intrigue. The chapters are short and end on cliffhangers, which is exactly what I want in a suspense novel. When it's midnight and I can't put a book down, what better excuse to keep reading than "Well, it's just five more pages and I have to find out what happens next...." until that happens five or six times and then it's 1am. The protagonist Mariana is processing her own grief and trauma from the death of a partner, all while working as a therapist and leading challenging group therapy sessions, so we know her personal background and demons will play a large role in the central mystery. Based on the early chapters, I fully expect this to be just as fast-paced, un-put-downable, and psychologically disturbing as The Silent Patient, and I can't wait to read more. What will Mariana see when she puts on the news?!
