The very cover and title of The Maidens promises the complexity and intrigue of a Greek tragedy. And the very first sentence, "Edward Fosca was a murderer." presents the promise and the certainty of a mystery solved. And yet, in short order, the author, Alex Michaelides, plunges us into the unease of uncertainty as we follow Mariana's assertions about Fosca's guilt. The reader is hooked but still does not even know anything about the crime ....or even who has been murdered ! We are introduced to Mariana, her deceased husband, her father, her patient Henry. The Maidens promises both a character driven and plot driven mystery - a rarity and always the recipe for a page turner !
