Anyone who enjoyed Alex Michaelides's first book THE SILENT PATIENT will be excited to see that another book from this author is available. In THE MAIDENS, something is creepy and scary starting with page one. A murderer is on the loose; Marianna seems to be a sensitive woman without any unusual physical strength or detective skills to assist her in her determined quest to put an end to the murderer's threat to society. Readers will immediately find themselves wanting to know more about this woman who was raised in Greece and has lost the love of her life. Michaelides pulls on the reader's heartstrings with his early scene of Marianna, holding her partner's worn running shoes against her chest as she sobs.

Interestingly, therapy again plays a part in the story. Mariana uses a room in her home for the group therapy sessions, and one male patient is particularly volatile. Not only does Henry break the group rules and agitate other members of the group but openly declares his obsession with Mariana. The situation is imploding quickly, and readers will want to turn the pages as fast as they can read.
