A Modern Greek Tragedy
Wow! Somehow in less than 20 pages, the author has me hooked. It usually takes me a while to become invested in a book as sometimes the character build-up can be dull, although a necessity of a good story.
This did not happen in “The Maidens.” The character build-up immediately entranced me. The completely depressing yet fascinating build-up of Mariana both horrified and intrigued me. A woman dealing with the death of a lover, a group of very intense individuals in therapy (that she hosts), and an obsessive patient that may or may not be stalking her - talk about a difficult journey!
And yet, we aren’t even to the “meat” of the book yet. Reading the plot summary, we know it’s about a murderer and a cult-like secret society and how Mariana attempts to investigate the murder. The fact the book has not touched on the murder yet, and I’m still engrossed, is a testament to how powerful and fascinating this book will be. I look forward to reading it in the future, and already know that I will not be able to put this book down.
