The first chapter introduces what we know from the blurb- that a young woman, Grace, finds pictures of women in an abandoned suitcase at Grand Central. This is the peg on which the entire story unfolds. However, what I also liked was that in merely a short chapter we suddenly get to know so much about Grace, her painful past and what she is up to in the present. All this is light and fleeting, and does not rest heavy on the reader.

I liked the narrative style that moves back and forth in time and space. The book begins in New York, in 1946. The second chapter takes us to London, in 1943. This kind of writing makes the reader more active in participating in the book.

New characters are introduced in the subsequent chapters, without any waste of time, just as one would expect in a fast-paced novel.

Another aspect I appreciate is the underlying theme of feminism, evident in the inherent strength of the women characters, especially in the context of the time.
