Grace is adrift after losing her husband in the war. She finds a suitcase at Grand Central Station filled with photographs of young women. The case belongs to Eleanor Trigg who died in a car accident that day. Grace is determined to find the origins of the photos. This leads her on a fact-finding journey into war efforts and archives to find out about each woman.

The story is engaging and an interesting learning experience to see what roles women plated during the war. Jenoff has powerful writing that intertwines the lives of the women in an impactful way, making the reader keenly feel their successes and losses. Both women's stories are captivating and the plots of each keep the novel driving to its conclusion.
