Creative and new ideas are what makes this book so great. I personally have not read any other fantasy books based in MesoAmerica. I enjoyed the magic and mystery of the family's powers. The stories and fantasical history of the people are unique. The reader is immediately thrown into this world without a drawn-out backstory so it catches your attention and keeps you plugging away. It was a fast read because I could not put it down.
The family and political drama are intruiging, especially the mother-daughter relationship and the male-female relationships in society. I think many young adult readers may be able to relate to the feelings portrayed with both Indir and Saya. Not just the exploited and negative ones, but the feelings of strength and pushing through to find yourself. The author makes the idea of female strength so important.
