A lyrical, magical story with Mesoamerican roots. The magical world-building is based in Ancient Mesoamerica and is unlike any other, infused with songs and spirit.

Indir can access a magical realm in her dreams and is threatened by secrecy and a change in power, whereas Saya is threatened by her own family. Indir and Saya are facing different challenges, one driven by her love of family and another by her own instincts.

The story avoids some traditional cliches and troupes that can be a bit tired, even if they're fun and totally understandable. It's just nice to get something fresh and diverse. The characters are well written, accessible, and engaging.

I absolutely can't wait for the second book! Feminist novels based on mythology and ancient cultures - sign me up every time and Huerta did not disappoint!
