I received this book in ARC form from MacMillan, and I thank them so much for the opportunity!

Let me first start by saying that I have never seen Night of the Living Dead. I know. My horror kid card has been revoked; but I never really liked zombie stories. I’m not one for needless gore. This story is unlike typical, at least in my she’s, zombie stories. Don’t get me wrong; there is blood and gore. Lots of it. But there’s so much depth, as well.

I love the way this book was written. Without giving too much away, it’s written in vignettes that follow certain characters at a given time. I loved every character, and I could tell that great care went into crafting them into existence. I even loved the big bad...there are similarities to current American politics that really make you think about the ending, and the way that a political figure’s followers can be blinded by self service.

But I mostly loved the way that it all came together. I loved that the zombies in this story were more than a blood and guts factory, and that their purpose reinforces ideals that we already know yet don’t practice. I would recommend this book to anyone...as long as they could handle the carnage.
