The Living Dead is reminiscent of The Stand in both plot and size. A mysterious plague has caused in uprising in the previously decreased. Random survivors' fights against "Them" are chronicled, some intersecting.

I'm not sure what I expected but this wasn't it. First off, it's WAY longer than I realized. I don't mind a long book if it keeps me interested but this fell short in places. I was engaged for awhile, then the pace would slow, the chapter would drag on, there were characters I would prefer to hear more about, others less. At some point I'd get back into the story and the cycle would repeat. I had to put this down a few times and read something faster paced for a break.
I thought the sections told from a zombie's point of view was a unique, interesting touch. There was occasional gore but not as much as I would have expected of a zombie tale, and somewhat lost in amongst all the exposition. The primary focus was the characters, which is good, but made it feel more like any survivalist tale than the zombie horror I anticipated. I also had a hard time feeling invested in several of the characters.
Another thing, tiny but distracting- seemed like they were trying too hard to make a statement about race, especially in the beginning. I read for enjoyment, not politics. A mention is sufficient, no need to keep repeating it.
Appreciated the note at the end, the acknowledgement of the work that went into this book.
