I have lots of Zombie books. It's one of the sub-genres of horror I especially enjoy. This book is not like any of them. Sure we have a zombie apocalypse. With 650 pages, we are going to have lots of zombies and lots of running away from zombies and lots of people turning into zombies. All the wonders of zombie stories are here.
But the are things here that are more than the typical dead, hands outstretched, brains seeking meat machines. These zombies are different, very different. First off, they aren't called zombies until nearly 10 years after they first rose. They are called They or Them or Ghouls or White-eyes after their most distinctive feature. They seem to communicate with each other. They learn things. They remember their past life.
There are a number of characters we follow as they discover, run from, and occasionally become the living dead. Sometimes it's sad and sometimes it's not. It depends on the character. My favorite is Ella. the statistician who records the histories of anyone who calls her.
I truly loved this book. It was very smoothly written. I would sit down with it and say I'll read 50 pages and then go to bed, only to find when I come up for air I've read 80 or more. I may have to reread this book in the future, and there are very few books I reread. Even if you don't do horror, I recommend this book for the people within its' pages.
