Can a book be "too real?"
The first chapter resonates with me and what's happening in our world right now. I thought of the numerous empty grocery shelves at my local store when I read about fear that gripped the characters -- pushing them to over-exercise, to pour themselves into work, or to turn to darker vices. I visualized masked people standing six-feet-apart when I read the line about how fictional characters rationed Halloween candy. In the part where a family keeps a singular frozen turkey, I was reminded of how impossible it is to find the frozen food you want during COVID-19. The author's imagery of blood-soaked streets and the description of characters gripped me. The zombies described as "They" having a pure and innocent hunger for blood compared to a child's innocent need for food was gritty enough to keep me wanting to read more of this modern horror story.
