George A. Romero's last gift to horror fans is an epically proportioned examination of the zombie apocalypse. Kudos to Daniel Kraus for bringing his own horror "chops" and compelling storytelling to finish this work, honoring and expanding upon Romero's writing, notes, and ideas/themes from his films and stories.

The Living Dead starts with perhaps the first corpse to reanimate and chronicles the lives and experiences of several people from all walks of life as they elude danger (or don't) and learn how to navigate this new world. There are plenty of nerve-wracking moments and equisitely gory sequences, but the true story, as expected, is in the harsh inevitability of man's inhumanity to man--and of those few who are able to withstand and overcome it through peace, love, and understanding.

This is a zombie novel for the ages that will keep readers engaged and thoughtful.
