Going into this book, I was hesitant. I've never liked books in the third person. The thing is, this book was determined to change my mind. It's just so intricate and interesting, and definitely the kind of book you read if you want to think. I can't say much without spoiling it, but it feels extremely surreal to read this book, and know that most of the hardships of the characters stem from one event.

I automatically felt bad for Johanna, who just wanted these children so badly, only for them to all mutually dislike her. Her husband is distant, her kids are distant, and she's just trying so hard to push the family together. I cried three times while reading this book.
*SPOILER*

How broken Salo was, how disconnected, and the way he passed? I literally said "this is too good" out loud. Three times. I've never read a book that made me think more than this book did. I just loved it.
