Poe feels very edgy. Is the world post-apocalyptic? What happened to make it this way? Why is the leader called The Admiral? Also, she's so dramatic over Call. They were fifteen! I can't suspend my disbelief at the story and the world is poorly explained. Why would the raiders be so stupid as to keep trying to climb the ship - couldn't they see the way its armor was meant to kill them? Writing Poe's engineering ideas as dreams sent to her by some unknown seems like lazy writing to me as well and doesn't make it seem like her ideas at all. Where does the gold go once it's brought back? Poe acts illogically: going off to search for something unknown, expecting she'll just know when she's found it, then being frustrated because she doesn't know what she's looking for! This excerpt makes me completely uninterested in ever reading the full book.
