I thought the premise was different and captivating: some sort of dystopian future (or present? the time in uncertain), where an outpost of people, outcast from the main society, try to survive by mining gold from rivers. That was enough to get me engaged, but then a mystery was thrown in and I was hooked. Always a sucker for a who dun it!
