Poe is an orphan that lost the person she loved most the first time she ventured out on a dredge ship to find gold for the Outpost where she grew up. Two years later the Admiral in charge of the outpost insists that Poe join the next voyage, even though she's spent the time in between developing technology to protect the sailors, the gold and the ship. It's not long before she's receiving threats and suspecting people on her ship of being a traitor or a spy for the Admiral. This book has good flow to it, but somehow doesn't feel quite right with the protagonist being only seventeen and yet having the knowledge and authority to be a ship captain. It's also clear that two years later losing friend and love Call is ever present in her mind. It isn't bad, it just doesn't seem fully developed or overly complex eighty pages into the book - maybe it gets better?
