“The Last Murder at the End of the World” is author Stuart Turton’s latest novel. Set on a remote island at the end of the world, it concerns a group of villagers and their elders. The villagers are peaceful and content to serve the island (where they have gathered to escape a mysterious deadly fog that is enveloping the world), and to obey the three elders who run the island. One morning they awake with no memory of the night before, and find that one of their elders has been murdered. The murder has triggered the lowering of the security system that protected them from the fog, and they have 91 hours to find the murderer before the island is consumed by the fog.

I very much enjoyed this story. Emory, one of the villagers, becomes the “lead detective” due to her habit of asking unanswerable questions, which finally serves a purpose. She is assisted by her daughter, Clara. Both women are extremely likable and believable protagonists. I also liked everyone else in the story - they were all well drawn characters.

Due to the twists and turns of this story, it is difficult to say much more without revealing spoilers. I will say that the world-building in this book is excellent, and the story and the conclusion are not only satisfying, but examine the nature of what life and living mean. I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys mysteries with lots of twists and turns.
