What is the island about?

My first impression of The Last Murder at the End of the World is that it is a read that will pull the reader in from the first page until the mystery is solved. The Island sounds like an ideal, safe place to live but why does it have to be safe? What happened to make it necessary? And who murdered the scientist? So many questions.
