i was so excited when i saw i'd won a copy of a queer psychological thriller from BookishFirst! it's been a while since i read a book with an unreliable narrator, and Sloan is such a good one - i stayed up until 3am to finish this. the way Sloan loses herself as the story progresses - just wow. it was beautifully written and honestly mildly terrifying in a way i did not expect. the ending (no spoilers!) i also didn't expect - i could see the events clearly leading up to it in the last few pages / chapter, but not before then.

i spotted one use of "where" instead of "were," but other than that nothing bugged me. i liked the relationship between Sloan and her former best friend (or, the tiny bits of it that we get - but it makes sense with the rest of the story). the entire novel is filled with uncertainty and doubt and suspicions, which i love. it's definitely worth picking up a copy when it releases on august 15, 2023!
