The Last Girls Standing is a creepy, psychological thriller with an unbelievable ending.
Cherry and Sloan are the only survivors of a camp massacre. The two girls had already been romantically intwined before the events at camp, but their relationship is solidified by their shared trauma. But when Sloan finds evidence that Cherry may have been in on the killings, she doesn’t what is real and what is false.
This psychological thriller is creepy from the first chapters as we see the girls after the attack. Jennifer Dugan looks at coping strategies and how people deal with trauma casting the girls as opposites. We see one ready to move on and one unable. Sloan is a very sympatric character as she tries to deal with the fact that no one likes the way she deals with events. The tension remains tight for the entire novel as the story of the massacre unfolds. The ending is true horror and beautifully done.
The downside is that I wanted more about the cult and earlier on. I wanted to know more about what happened so I could empathize with the characters more. Sloan’s memory repression only gives tiny pieces as it would become the apex for the whole ending. I would have loved a small perspective about the cult and killings, just a page or two to give a little basis in truth for the reader.
Overall, I sped through this book as I had to find out what really happened.
