I love a good murder mystery and horror book even more so when there's a slasher retro vibe like Scream. I think that this is a great introduction for younger readers to get into this kind of genre without the book being too intense. While I could see it being some what intense for younger readers, I think that this is a good dip into this genre for YA readers. The cover is what initially drew me into the novel. It reminds me of novels like Final Girls or My Best Friend's Exorcism. I think that it does not initially come across as a YA novel but I'm sure the further you get into the novel there is less gore than you would see in either of the aforementioned novels. I also enjoy that these is a fresh take on this genre with it having LGBTQ+ representation in the book. The summer camp killer is a trope that has been used over and over but I think that this novel is a fresh spin on this trope that is good for younger readers.
