This snippet sets readers up for a thrilling and terrifying mystery. Sloan and Cherry went through a traumatic experience, but at least they went through it together. The little insight we get of their relationship is an interesting one. And I think that this shows Sloan's PTSD in a real way. I am very invested in what Sloan might discover about her trauma.
