Within the first few pages of "The Last Girls Standing," Dugan creates an atmosphere of mystery and tension. Through cryptic flashbacks, Sloan begins to reveal to the reader that she is one of only two survivors of a deadly massacre at the summer camp she was to be working at. Cherry, the only other survivor, is her closest confidant and girlfriend and the two have only gotten closer since the "incident," in spite of Sloan's mom's disapproval. Despite seeing the numerous therapists and homeopathic specialists her mother has forced her to go to, Sloan still cannot remember a small window of time between when the killings started and when they ended and she is desperate to find out what happened during those minutes.

Dugan does an excellent job of drawing the reader in from the very first page. As each little nugget of information about the "incident" is unfolded, the story becomes more gripping and strange. Sloan's relationship with Cherry, while appearing to be loving and, in Sloan's eyes, beneficial, is peppered with questions and uncertainty, which is just another added chord of tension in the story.

The beginning chapters are gripping and full of interesting characters, with only pieces of the mystery falling into place, leaving so much room for suspense. Readers are sure to find this book difficult to put down, as Sloan's quest to discover what really happened that day of the massacre leads her down a dangerous path, one that is sure to be full of heart-pounding drama. I definitely want to see where the rest of this story goes and find out if Sloan will ever learn truth about the most tragic day of her life.
