The cover and the blurb were enticing and created interest and a feeling of foreboding about the story. The first 3 chapters focused almost entirely on Sloan, her family, her relationship with them; especially her adoptive mother, her past, what she remembered about that night and how intertwined she was with Cherry almost from the beginning. The reader doesn't really get a feel for Cherry and her mother until the fourth chapter. Prior to this point Cherry seems to be just a pretty flirty girl who is as in love with Sloan as Sloan is with her.

We see the massacre through Sloan's nightmare but hints things are missing are already becoming clear. Cherry seems to be creating an us against everyone who wasn't there emeshment. It is also clear she and her mother have done cons and stolen money to get by on countless occasions. Sloan has rationalized this as they needed it to survive, did they really. The rose colored glasses are knocked askew by Cherry's reaction to her both looking in the box and asking questions.
