4.5🌟 Rating. The Last Bloodcarver has a little bit of everything and I loved it! Set in a fantasy realm where heartsooths are persecuted, and on the verge of extinction, our MC Nhika is trying to survive. Heartsooths can, through physical touch, affect an individual which can be used to heal ailments or could possibly be used to cause pain and death. She is constantly torn between her roots taught to her by the family she has lost and her instincts that want to keep her alive in a world trained to hate her. After an incident, she is caught and sold off to a family that wants to use her to solve their father's murder by healing the only other person present when he died. In doing this, Nhika is thrust into a tangled web of lies and danger that she knows if she isn't careful will get her killed.
I loved the flow this book provided and how it pulled me along as the plot developed and changed. The fantasy side of this book was well thought out and I felt I understood the world building and the strife and feaer felt by both the mortals and the heartsooths. I did not expect romance in this book but appreciated how it developed later in the book as it felt more natural than having someone having feelings early on in a storyline. The one thing that I have the most praise for is the use of anatomy structures and functions. As a medical professional I was impressed not only by the depth used within the book but also how easy it was to read and be understood even by those who do not hear these terms all the time. She was able to explain anatomical processes that most other books gloss over and to me it gave a much more detailed picture of what was going on and provided a much more believable story. I cannot wait for the sequel, I'm only sad that I cannot pick it up right now.
