Wow! There is so much to love about this book. I will start with the cover. Fabulous artwork and a true eye-catcher. You can't help but pick the book up and check it out with that stunning cover. Moving on, I also loved the world-building and the characters. The setting is top-notch and quite unlike anything I have read in a long time. The characters were also unique with really cool abilities and had a lot of depth. I found their take on things relatable and really rooted for Nhika. She was strong and determined and never forgot where she came from. Yeah, she was a bit prickly at first but once you see what she is up against you get it. She needs to be like that to survive. As far as the magic, the blood carving/heart-soothing system is so neat, I loved it. Science-based magic systems are so cool and seem to be underused in YA. Anyway, I really cannot recommend this enough. It has it all from strong characters to fantastic world-building and a unique magic system. It is fantastic.
