Vanessa Le brings us into a new world in her first novel The Last Bloodcarver. Our heroine, Nhika is just trying to survive when her city's elite "rescue" her but only in hopes that she can heal their friend. Add in a mysterious man and you have all the makings of a classic YA fantasy.

The author brings us into an immersive world heavily inspired by Eastern traditions. Not only does this world have your traditional Eastern practice and top of the line Western medicine but Le also introduces another healing practice. Nhika is a heartsooth, presumably the last one, after her family and those like her were conquered by a rival nation. Here, heartsooths are feared and are referred to a Bloodcarvers- a name to reflect the fear other cultures have of Nhika ability to controlling others organs with a simple touch. Jaded and alone in the world, Nhika must find who she truly is, a heartsooth or a bloodcarver, healer or killer.

This is a fun, fast pace read. While you are introduced to a new world, the author does so in a way that doesn't bog you down with details. 4 1/2 stars!! Can't wait for the second book in this duology.
