Vanessa Le did an absolutely amazing job with her debut novel. The Last Bloodcarver snagged my attention from the very first sentence and held it until the end of the book. I believe this was the first book I’ve read with Vietnamese ties and it will most definitely not be the last.

The world building was phenomenal. I’m a sucker for good world building, and most definitely expect it in any sort of fantasy, and I wasn’t let down. It was so vivid and clear making it easy for me to picture everything. I truly felt like I was part of the world while reading.

I loved the main character, Nhika, who’s a Bloodcarver. I was internally yelling at her to run faster when she was being chased in the beginning after being turned in. Then I was terrified when she was being sold to the highest bidder. Thankfully that family was great, I loved them too and was happy to see that all they really wanted was her help solving a murder.

While I didn’t love the ending, it also wasn’t the worst ending ever either. I will most definitely be reading the second book when it comes out and Vanessa Le has become an insta-buy author for me.
