Vietnamese-Inspired YA Fantasy
From the first pages, we're pulled into a world much like ours but in the past (intro of telephones, automatons, science), but there is a group treated as monsters, solely because of their ability to alter a living being's body with a single touch. They're called Bloodcarvers, and they're hunted for all sorts of gruesome reasons. The main character Nhika lives as a healer, visiting patients and using her ability in secret while pretending to be a homeopathic doctor. Then she's caught and caged.
The world-building is good and the story flows smoothly, though this type of fantasy is not something I usually gravitate toward because of the real-world, near-modern elements. But I do want to keep reading!
Not a fan of the cover, to be honest.
TW/CW: polytheism, racism, atheism, violence, death (including animals), black market/trafficking, implied cannibalism, swearing/profanity
