This is a tale of original magic, buried superstition and the courage of one feisty girl. Nhika may think of fox spirits as villainous tricksters but it’s clear she’s a tricksy one herself.

The story moves swiftly with barely a dull moment. Even when Nhika is locked in a cage, her mind is busy, turning over prospects for escape before she’s sold to someone who wants to eat her liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti. She manages to outwit buyers, stall her captors and plot her own rescue. She might be a damsel in distress but she’s not waiting for a prince to save her.

This is a thrilling story of adventure, rare magic and the people who would exploit it. It’s a story of a girl whose soft heart has landed her in a terrible predicament. It’s a gripping, moving fabrication of lost family, abilities passed through a matriarchal line and a structure society with rot at its core. I can’t wait to see what happens with Nhika is let loose from her cage.
