Marie Lu does it again. Is there anything she can’t write? This was historical fiction woven with magic, at its best. And can we take a moment to appreciate the cover. The blue on blue as well as the tree, the cover is beautiful!

Kingdom of Back revolves around Nannerl, someone who wants to compose and be remembered. I really liked Nannerl. She was determined and talented, even when she knew that being a woman in the eighteenth century made composing harder. I liked how hard working she was and I specially liked her perspective and narrative amd how she questioned everything. I also really liked the bond between both siblings as well as the dynamic. They both strived to be the best and do what they loved without it neccessarily being pinned against one another.

I absolutely loved the writing. It was lyrical and lush. It was like music woven in every page. I was expecting something a little straight forward like Marie Lu’s last book Warcross, and was suprised at how lyrical is was written. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I will say, there were a few moments where the story felt a little slow, but for the most part, it was evenly paced and not a story that was rushed or can be read rushed, but rather savored.

And as always, Marie Lu brings the world to life. It wasn’t just historical fiction, but also a magical world that was music to my ears (pun intended). I liked how the descriptions were easy to follow but also subtle at times. It was easy to picture and follow along with the history and the way society worked.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was one of my anticipated reads, but I’m not a huge fan historical fiction, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was lyrical and magical with an unshakeable bond between siblings with a few magical twists and turns along the way.
