Based on this first look, Marie Lu's 'The Kingdom of Back' will be one of my most anticipated YA releases of 2020.

Lu's beautiful writing begins to pull together strands of music and magic, history and fantasy, in really compelling ways. I also love how the story interweaves issues of gender and growing up (coming-of-age).

Ultimately, 'The Kingdom of Back' looks like it will be as richly complex as it is genre-defying. ...On that note, the book cover is more than gorgeous - it's thought-provoking. Making sense of the luminous tree branches/roots pushes readers to think about connections across time (and across worlds, historical and fantastical??).
